EX-Bolton Wanderers midfielder Khalilou Fadiga was an instrumental figure in Senegal’s brilliant 2002 World Cup run in South Korea and Japan.
The central midfielder joined the Whites in the summer of 2004 from Inter Milan but his career never got off the ground at the Reebok as a heart condition limited him to only 21 appearances.
His World Cup campaign got off to a contrasting start as he orchestrated a 1-0 victory over holders France in the opening game.
A 1-1 draw with Denmark followed, before Fadiga opened the scoring in the final group game against Uruguay from the spot after former Wanderers’ fan favourite El Hadji Diouf was felled in the area.
The game ended 3-3 and Senegal progressed to the last 16 in second place.
The midfielder was not chosen for the 2-1 extra-time victory over Sweden in the last 16 but returned for the quarter-final defeat to Turkey.
Fadiga went on to make 37 appearances for Senegal scoring four goals before ending his international career.
The Senegalese international recorded only one goal for Bolton – a free-kick away to Portsmouth in 2006, a game in which he also missed a first-half penalty.
He went on to have a loan spell at Derby County before joining Coventry City in 2007 and has struggled to find a permanent club since.
