SCHOOLDAY memories came flooding back when Johnson Fold Primary School stepped back in time to celebrate its diamond jubilee.
Former staff and pupils came along to enjoy afternoon tea at a 1950s-themed summer fair.
Teachers dressed up in 1950s fashion and games and treats of yesteryear were enjoyed by visitors, including candy floss, hog roasts, roll a penny and a coconut shy.
Johnson Fold Primary School opened in July, 1953, when 120 pupils were admitted — and teachers say it has been at the heart of the community ever since.
Today the school has 221 pupils and a purpose-built nursery was opened in 1975.
Visitors were taken on tours of the school by current pupils and as they walked the corridors they relived their school days.
Joanne Willan, head of school inclusion, said: “The sun shone and everyone had a fantastic time, the whole community celebrated with us, visitors were taken on tours of the school by pupils and old photos and log books were on display.
“Some former pupils even found their names in the punishment books form the 1960s and 70s — 2013 has been very special and isn't over yet.
“Up to now Baroness Ann Taylor has planted a tree, we have held a ‘design a plate’ competition as well as our summer fair, we also intend to do a diamond jubilee balloon release in the autumn. Our children take great pride in their school and staff celebrate their achievements, academic or otherwise.
“The children, along with a great staff team, make this school special and unique as it is, and will continue to be at the heart of the community providing an outstanding education for years to come.”
