STARRING Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor in his first season as the Time Lord, this story was originally broadcast in the Spring of 1970.
A crisis develops at a top-secret installation where an attempt is being made to penetrate the earths’ crust and UNIT is called in.
Meanwhile, the Doctor, whilst trying to repair the TARDIS, is transported to a parallel universe where UNIT is a security force in an England which is a military dictatorship.
Both worlds have a similar drilling project and The Doctor has to battle in one world to save the other.
This story gives the opportunity for the UNIT regulars to shine as they play their ‘normal’ characters in our world, but their evil twins in the parallel one.
Full marks to the late, lamented Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart) and Caroline John (Liz Shaw) – not forgetting John Levene as Sergeant Benton for their dual portrayals.
The double disc has some brand-new extras, including the usual ‘making-of’ and commentaries.
Of particular interest though are the documentaries about the HAVOC stunt team and how Caroline Shaw was suspended over a weir whilst four months pregnant; the fourth part of Lost in the Dark Dimension which outlines the attempts to bring the show back during its’ 1989 – 2005 hiatus; and Part One of The UNIT Family, where The Doctor’s relationship with the organisation is analysed.
