STARRING Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, this adventure was originally broadcast in February 1982.
The year is 1666 and although England is in the grip of the Great Plague, the world is under threat from the Terileptils.
In fact, the Doctor shouldn’t even be there – he is supposed to be taking Tegan (Janet Fielding) back to her job at Heathrow, but the TARDIS has other ideas.
Teaming up with actor Richard Mace (Michael Robbins, the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) and Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) track down the Terileptils – who want to de-populate the world by releasing plague-infected rats – to London.
We also discover how the Great Fire of London really started.
The re-mastered episodes are crystal clear and while Davison is coming to terms as The Doctor, the acting is excellent – with a wonderfully over-the-top performance by Robbins as Richard Mace.
The extras from the initial release of this story on DVD are still included, new ones have been added on a second disc.
They include documentaries taking the cast back to the locations where the story was filmed; and also to Broadcasting House, where the importamce of the building in the history of the show is discussed.
The audio adventures of The Doctor are also investigated in Doctor Forever – The Apocalypse Element.
