QUIZ fanatic Anne Scott has appeared on TV’s Mastermind, Eggheads, Bullseye and 15 to 1 — but she reckons being crowned the Brain of Bolton tops the lot.
Retired teacher Mrs Scott, who lives in Harwood, lifted the trophy after seeing off fierce competition from the cream of the Bolton Premier Quiz League.
She becomes the sixth winner of the trophy, which was won last season by Anne Hegerty, one of the stars of the ITV quiz show The Chase.
Mrs Scott, who taught at St Gabriel’s RC High School in Bury as well as Withins School and Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton, said: “I am delighted to have won. The standard of competition is really high.
“I have done well on television quiz shows before, including coming second on 15 to 1 and winning 10 times on a show called 100 Per Cent — but this has given me the most satisfaction.”
Mrs Scott, who is married to husband Brian and has two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, puts the secret of her success down to having a good memory.
She said: “I have a pretty good all round knowledge but taking a good note of everything that you read and remembering what you watch on television is really important.”
The Brain of Bolton competition is open to players who have scored the most points throughout the regular Bolton Premier Quiz League season.
In this year’s final at Astley Bridge Conservative Club, Mrs Scott answered a series of general knowledge questions to reach the last four before seeing off the tough challenge of Derek Heyes, Sam Roberts and Mike McGreavy.
Her win means she will have to sit out next season’s final, though she has pledged to attempt to regain the trophy the following season.
In the meantime she is not likely to be bored.
Apart from quizzing — she represents Bradshaw Conservative Club in the league — she has many other hobbies, including ballroom, sequence and line dancing, and she helps choose the music for weekly dance sessions at Smithills Conservative Club.
Mrs Scott added: “It’s good to keep your brain active and your body too.”
