THE family of the teenage girl who was killed by dogs in Atherton are campaigning for a change in the law.
Jade Anderson, aged 14, died last Tuesday after being attacked by four out-of-control dogs in Chaucer Grove.
Police are still investigating the incident, but it is not yet known if the owner of the dogs will be charged. A post mortem examination revealed Jade died from multiple injuries.
The dogs, two Staffordshire Bull Terriers and two Bull Mastiffs, were shot by armed officers at the house.
Jade’s family have now started an e-petition, called Justice For Jade, calling for changes in the laws governing dogs.
A family spokesman wrote on Facebook: “We want to get the law changed to make dog owners accountable for their dogs.
“At the moment the police have no powers to prosecute dog owners if their dog attacks somebody on private property.
“We want that changed, as well as regulating certain breeds of dogs so they have a licence and have the dog registered and microchipped.
“This would give police the power to confiscate vicious dogs that are unlicensed and, hopefully, we can save other family’s suffering like we have gone through.”
If the group gets 100,000 signatures, MPs will be obliged to debate the issue in the Commons.
