ZAT Knight hopes Wanderers can still give Kevin Davies a fairytale send-off.
With the skipper due to end his 10-year stay at the Reebok at the end of the season, the man who will most likely inherit the armband still harbours ambitions of a play-off final at Wembley.
It looks a much taller order after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Charlton, which leaves Wanderers six points adrift of the play-off places.
But as Dougie Freedman’s side look to bounce back against Huddersfield tonight, Knight believes the issue of Davies’s departure should be seen as an incentive for a fighting finish.
“Kevin is an experienced pro and he’s come in, trained properly, and the players haven’t really said too much about his situation,” he said. “We know we’ve got a job to do.
“If he is leaving, he wants to do that with the team going into the Premier League.
“If we could give him that goodbye it would be a massive thing. But we want to do it for ourselves too. I stayed here because I wanted to get the club back at the first time of asking.
“We’re close, we really are close, but I don’t want to live in regret. Come Tuesday we’ve got to get that ball rolling again for the last seven games.”
Suspensions for Sam Ricketts and Craig Davies could mean a bit of shuffling for Freedman against Huddersfield, who held Wanderers to a 2-2 draw at the John Smiths Stadium in December.
Knight is confident Freedman has enough strength in depth to cope with their absences.
“Sam’s been fantastic for us and now he misses a game; Craig misses a game, so we need all our players now,” he said. “I know they have been coming off the bench but we feel we’ve had a strong bench so I don’t think it will be a big problem.
“They can come in and do a job now. We’re a squad and everyone has to do their bit.”
