WANDERERS Under-18s coach David Lee praised the attitude of his players after an impressive win at Chelsea on Saturday.

A brace from winger Tom Walker and a Niall Maher goal made it two Elite Group wins from two for the young Whites after breaking their duck at Crystal Palace a week earlier.

And Lee, who coaches the side with Tony Kelly, says the 3-2 triumph was just reward for a team that included seven first-year scholars for the second successive weekend.

Lee said: “To have superb attitudes and a desire to work hard is a must at any level of football and the players had that in abundance.

“Working hard off the ball to close the opponents down and working in units was pleasing to see.”

Wanderers started brightly at the Blues’ Cobham training ground but the home side took the lead through a deflected Jesse Starkey shot.

The Whites responded quickly and when Elliot Newby was brought down in the box after a good run by Tom Youngs, Walker stepped up to put away the penalty.

Wanderers then went ahead shortly after the break when Maher drilled home a low drive from 20 yards.

Chelsea were not done, however, and Ambrose Gnahore levelled it at 2-2 on 70 minutes. But Walker fired home from an acute angle to clinch the points.

Lee said: “Chelsea, with an array of talent and wealth, tested us. But we absorbed the pressure well.

“The confidence within the group shone with all the players reacting well to a hard challenge.”
