YOUNG sportsmen and women from Bolton certainly made a splash in the Manchester Youth Games.

Years Five to 13 pupils at Bolton School represented the town at the games, which included teams from the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs.

The under-10s swim team, made up of Years Four and Five pupils, from Hesketh House, Bolton School’s junior girls’ school, were joint winners with Trafford.

The junior boys’ Bolton School pupils took third place in the same competition.

The tournament had been a mixture of individual and relay races and the results were decided by the best times.

Senior school boys also enjoyed success in the water by winning the under-13 juniors water polo competition held at the Manchester Aquatic Centre, where Year 10 boys helped out by volunteering as stewards and officials.

Coach Hayden Howard said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere in the pool with teams from all over the Manchester area.

“The standard of play and competitiveness throughout the day was second to none.

“At the end of a successful day of water polo the Bolton School team triumphed, winning the final game 6-3 against Crompton House in their age group. Having won the same competition last year, it gives them a nice double.”

Bolton School’s senior rugby team took part in the opening ceremony at the Etihad Stadium and went on to be runners-up in the first under-18s Rugby Union Sevens tournament.

At the Sugden Sports Centre the under-15s boys’ volleyball team went one better than last year by claiming the silver medal.

PE teacher Mark Chilton said: “With hundreds of pupils across all age groups and abilities competing, the Games were a great success with Bolton School continuing their strong association and success at the games.

“A big well done to all who competed.”
