MORE snow is expected in Bolton today as weather experts warned there was no end in sight to the cold weather.

Much of Britain faces a white weekend with widespread snow storms and strong winds expected.

The met office says Bolton could see up to 5cm (about 2in) of snow but that it will be shielded from the worst of the weather by the Pennines, which could see up to 30mm (1.2in) of snowfall.

Experts also warned of windy conditions.

A Met Office spokesman said: “We’ll see some snow on Friday but, because of the way the wind is blowing, Bolton will probably not see as large amounts as other places and a lot will fall on the Pennines.

“Bolton will be sheltered from the south easterly winds, but snowfall will carry on into Saturday and then peter out, to be replaced by dry, cold and windy conditions.

“There will be a big wind chill factor and it will be frosty at night.

“There’s no end to the cold weather in sight I’m afraid.”

The south west of England and Wales has already seen flooding in the last 24 hours caused by heavy and persistent rain, with the country expecting an average of 8cm of snow today.

Cllr David Chadwick, Bolton Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “So far we’ve spread something like 5,000 tonnes of salt since the winter started and I’ve got every confidence that our teams of gritters will be up to the task. The only problem might be if snow falls overnight as you need traffic to go over the grit to get rid of the snow.”
