IT was music to the audience’s ears at Bolton’s Music Centre Presents as young people showcased their talents.

The Albert Halls was packed for the third night of the music extravaganza, which has attracted more than 1,000 individual performances over the five-day line up with 100 staff and volunteers backstage.

Youngsters from Bolton Beginner Brass Band set the ball rolling on Tuesday evening with The Flintstones and What Makes You Beautiful, a number one hit for boy band One Direction.

Bolton Boys Choir and Guest Wider Opportunities School followed before Bolton Intermediate Percussion Ensemble impressed audiences with A La Samba to close the first half of the evening.

Bolton Intermediate Guitar Ensemble kicked off the second half of the night with four pieces, including Cecil Campbell’s One Step Beyond.

The ensemble was followed by Bolton Youth Flute Choir, Bolton Senior Brass Ensemble and the night drew to a close with Bolton Youth Jazz Orchestra performing Jive Samba by Nat Adderley.

Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Guy Harkin, and Mayoress Colette Harkin attended along with Cllr Joyce Kellett, Mayor of Horwich.

Martin Kay, deputy head of Bolton Music Service, said: “Bolton Music Centre Presents is a culmination of a full term’s work. It is definitely the highlight of our calendar year. We make sure students taking part in the second half watch those in the first half and the other way around so they can see what they can aspire to be.

“Other places have showcase events, but as far as I know this is the biggest in the area and to feature this many instruments.”

He said those involved rehearsed each week and have had around nine weeks to prepare for the event. Mr Kay said each night involved a range of abilities. Bolton Music Centre Presents aims to celebrate music-making within its orchestras, brass bands, concert bands, contemporary, jazz and percussion, choral and community ensembles.

Tickets for the evenings cost £5 for adults, £3 for people aged over 60 and under 19s are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Call the Albert Halls Box Office 01204 334400.
