FLOWERS have been left in the lane where a newborn baby’s body was found abandoned in a plastic bag.
Mourners for the unknown child also placed a teddy bear next to the cordoned off area in Ox Hey Lane, Lostock, where the body was found by dog walkers on Thursday.
There were no messages or notes left with the poignant tributes.
Police carried out another search of the area on Saturday and post-mortem tests are due to take place today.
No further clues to the identity of the baby have been found.
The dog walkers who found the baby have declined to speak to The Bolton News about the discovery.
The infant was wrapped in clothes and a plastic bag, along with a note written in English requesting an Islamic burial.
The age, sex and ethinicity of the child are still unknown and police would not say what condition the baby was in.
It was also not clear if the baby had been alive or was stillborn or how it came to be at the site, which is near Bolton Wanderers’ academy training ground.
Police were unable to say how long the baby had been there, but say they are concentrating their investigation on the last three or four days.
Ch Insp Carol Martin, from Bolton police, said: “Obviously this is an extremely upsetting incident and our investigation at the moment is two-fold: finding out how and when the baby died and locating the parents.
“I cannot begin to imagine what either parent may be going through and we are very worried about their physical and emotional state.
“It is likely the mother in particular will require some form of medical attention and I want to appeal directly to both parents or anyone who knows them to contact police or visit your GP or local hospital.” Anyone with information can call police on 101.
