A TRAINEE solicitor will run the London Marathon to raise money for the Meningitis Researchr.

Ruth Hill, aged 27, who works at Keoghs in Horwich, will take part in the event on April 21 in memory of her sister Anne Fletcher, who died in 2001 — a week after her 18th birthday.

The teenager died shortly after contracting septicaemia.

Ms Hill, from Bolton, who has taken part in a number of events to raise funds and promote awareness of meningitis and septicaemia, will be running the marathon with her friend, Alexandra Briggs. She said: “I am happy to be able to support MRF and raise funds in my sister’s memory. Training for the marathon is extremely challenging but it’s for a fantastic cause.

“Furthermore, sharing my experience and promoting awareness of meningitis and septicaemia in my local community may save lives.”

Bolton West MP Julie Hilling said: “It remains of the utmost importance that both members of the public and health professionals are able to recognise the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. The diseases can have devastating consequences and those who survive are often left with lasting physical or mental disabilities.”

Meningitis Research Foundation chief executive Chris Head said money raised by the friends will be spent on work into the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease along with supporting sufferers.
