CRAIG Davies reckons Wanderers should shelve play-off talk for now and concentrate on launching another unbeaten run.
Defeat at Ipswich was the first in nine for Dougie Freedman’s men, who have launched an unlikely assault on the top six as a result of their improved form.
But Davies – whose hard graft stood out at Portman Road – believes the squad would be better served by ignoring the league table altogether in the final eight games of the season.
“To be honest we haven’t really been concentrating on the play-offs,” he said.
“We’ve been working on winning games and seeing where it gets us. Yes, this is a kick in the teeth but we’ll get back in work and get back to doing what we’ve been doing.
“We haven’t been thinking about the play-offs or automatic promotion, just ourselves and doing our jobs. Wherever we end up at the end of the season, we end up.”
For all Wanderers’ toil, they failed to produce the clear-cut chances they have done in recent weeks.
Davies had few glimpses of goal but thinks the Whites should write off the performance as “one of those days”.
“They worked hard and to be honest I think we deserved something out of the game but it’s swings and roundabouts, we did it to Blackburn the other day,” he said.
“Unfortunately, this time it didn’t work for us.
“You get days like that when it just doesn’t happen. There was a couple of balls that Chris (Eagles) put through to me – one the keeper just got and the other came off the defender’s foot. On another day they would have been really good scoring opportunities.
“I can’t really think where we have gone wrong.
“In the last couple of weeks we’ve defended well and always got a chance but that clear-cut one never really came this time. That happens, and it’s disappointing for everyone.”
Dougie Freedman had kept a lid on the play-off excitement but broke character a little after the 1-0 defeat to state that his team were still very capable of climbing into the top six.
And Davies is willing to place his faith in the Wanderers staff as the club look to bounce back after the international break.
“We have got to be positive about it,” he said.
“The last couple of weeks have been really good and I’m sure if you would have offered the situation we’re in now to people a few weeks ago, they would have taken it. We’ve just got to keep our chins up.
“Everybody believes in what the manager is saying. The manager comes across like that, but as players that’s how we are as well. We don’t want to be thinking about play-offs.
“We need to be listening to the coaches and doing the things we have to do to get results.”
