SOME 100 years on and standards at a primary school continue to rise.
Lord Street Primary in Horwich which has recently marked its centenary year had more to celebrate when it was found to be providing a “good” standard of education to its children and is a place which youngsters enjoy.
Ofsted inspectors reported: “This is a much-improved school. Pupils make good progress. Most teaching is good and pupils enjoy school.”
Every area of the school was marked as good — the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.
Lord Street was marked satisfactory by Ofsted inspectors when they last visited, but during this visit they found the school had “outstanding” features.
Children were said to start the school with skills and abilities that are generally lower thanthose seen for that age group but leave reaching the levels expected.
Inspectors stated: “Progress is good and often better in the weaker aspects because of the extra attention they receive “Teaching is good and some outstanding teaching was observed. This enables pupils to make good progress.”
Ofsted said that “effective leadership” has enabled the school to improve.
In a quote for the Ofsted report, Year Six pupils wrote: “This is a friendly school — we enjoy lessons and are kind, especially to newcomers.”
Headteacher Andy Marshall said: “I am thrilled that Ofsted have recognised the dedication, commitment and professionalism of school staff. They have transformed the school and our children are flourishing as a result. This is an exciting time at Lord Street.
“The school’s significan’t improvement has been recognised by Ofsted and we are looking forward to a bright future.”
The school reached its 100 year milestone on August 12.
