WANDERERS will not be pushing Marvin Sordell out on loan before the end of the season amid rumours that Charlton Athletic want to take the striker back to London.

Reports on Wednesday claimed Chris Powell was seeking to take the England Under-21 international to The Valley to aid his side’s fight against relegation from the Championship, and had even explored the possibility of a permanent move in the summer.

It is not the first time the Team GB star has been linked with the Addicks, who had made tentative enquiries about a similar deal in January.

But with Dougie Freedman still searching for front-line reinforcements, it is understood that any approach would be rebuffed.

Sordell has not started a game since the 1-0 victory over Peterborough United at the end of February and has been an unused substitute in the last three games.

The £3.2million man has had an indifferent Reebok career since arriving from Watford a year ago but will again be part of the squad heading for Portman Road to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Freedman confessed soon after his appointment at the club that some of the 22-year-old’s problems had stemmed from homesickness, and he has steadily been linked with a string of capital clubs ever since.

But the youngster scored five goals in five games in January and had apparently turned a corner.

Speaking to The Bolton News last week, Sordell admitted he was feeling more comfortable as a Wanderers player after a successful run in the first team.

“I think it was just frustrating for me not to be able to play and score goals,” he said. “That's what I do.

“That's something I have done from a very young age and something I want to continue doing for a very long time. When I got those games and those goals then I felt a lot more confident.

“There was a better vibe and I think people recognised what I was about.

“I think that probably helps everything.”

Meanwhile, Brighton’s Ashley Barnes has been charged by the Football Association for deliberately tripping match official Nigel Miller during Wanderers’ 1-0 win at the Reebok last weekend.

Barnes is currently serving a four-match ban for what was his second red card of the season but could find the suspension extended when his case is heard later today.
