SKIPPER Kevin Davies is putting any talk of a new contract on hold as he bids to help Wanderers keep momentum in the race for a late promotion tilt.
The 35-year-old penned a new one-year deal last summer which will see him reach a landmark 10 years at the Reebok at the end of this season.
And having started the last two victories against Blackburn and Brighton – which took him to 37 appearances this season – the striker is still playing his part for the Whites.
Davies is unsure what the future holds beyond May, with manager Dougie Freedman stating recently discussions on any new deals would wait until nearer the end of the season.
He hopes to stay beyond a decade at the Reebok but admits his focus is firmly on the race for the play-offs.
Davies said: “There’s no talk of it (new contract) at the minute.
“The football is the most important thing. The club are probably going to be waiting and seeing where they are and if they get back to the Premier League then it might change.
“Of course I want to stay. This is my 10th season and there’s no talk of a contract at the minute, but it’s not about me, it’s about the club.
“I’ll keep doing my best until the end of the season and then hopefully I can carry on.”
The captain’s 10th Whites campaign did not start as planned as the team struggled to adapt to a first season outside the top flight for more than a decade.
A change of manager saw Freedman replace Owen Coyle, and Davies drop out of the starting XI as part of the new boss’s rotation policy.
But the turn of the year brought a change in fortunes that sees the team currently on a run of six wins and two draws in the last eight games.
Davies said: “We were desperate to get those back-to-back wins and once we’d got them, you could see the confidence and the belief return.
“We’ve been training extremely hard. You can see we’re winning a lot of these games towards the end now, which is testament to the fitness.
“As captain if you feel there is something that needs saying, you get together as a group and discuss things.
"We’ve got 25 players so it is difficult to keep them all focused because everyone wants to be playing.
“But the manager has shown he’s willing to use the whole squad and just wants us to make sure we’re ready.”
Davies may not start every game but has still surpassed the 400-appearance mark this season.
He has weighed in with six goals, and with the whole squad lifted by the current run of five successive Championship victories, he believes they are hitting form at the right time.
Wanderers sit just three points off the play-offs with nine games remaining.
“We’re on a really good run at the minute,” he said. “We’ve struggled through the season to have any sort of consistency but managed to get the back-to-back wins and gone on from there.
“The way we are playing now and the manner we play, we are not blowing teams away, we are grinding results out.
“But it’s a fantastic run and it’s put us back in amongst it.
“It shows you how quickly it can change round. We’re on an unbeaten run of eight now and we’ve got momentum. If we continue, that can push us right in amongst it.
“I said a few weeks ago when we were struggling that we could still get into contention.
“There is always one team that seems to put a run together and it seems to be us at the moment.”
