A FATHER-of-two’s car was set on fire — yards from the scene of a series of arson attacks on cars last weekend.

Abdul Manaf, aged 40, was furious when he discovered his blue Toyota Yaris had been set alight in Brandwood Street, Daubhill, at 12.50am on Saturday.

The attack comes a week after firefighters were called out three times in less than 10 minutes to three car blazes in neighbouring streets.

At 1.35am, last Sunday, a silver Peugeot 406 was set on fire in Daisy Street, and eight minutes later firefighters were alerted to a white Mercedes Sprinter van and a dark blue Vauxhall Zafira on fire in neighbouring Blackledge Street.

Mr Manaf, who has lived in Brandwood Street since 2010, said: “I was asleep upstairs, and my wife and children were as well.

“The fire brigade came — somebody next door had rang them.”

Mr Manaf said he did not know why anyone would set fire to the car and added firefighters had told him about the other nearby arson attacks.

He added: “I need a car to take the children to school.”

The front of the Toyota was damaged, meaning he can no longer drive it.

A fire service spokesman said: “The car was parked on the street and somebody had set fire to the front of the vehicle.”

He said some form of naked flame had been used to start the fire and added that about 25 per cent of the front of the vehicle was damaged.

A police spokesman said there was nothing to suggest Saturday’s arson attack was connected with last week’s wave of attacks, but they are investigating the incidents.
