BURGLARS have been targeting elderly people by claiming to be Bolton Council workers.

The conmen have struck twice in Deane and police have now released an e-fit of one of the men — and are urging anyone who recognises him to contact officers.

PC Joanne Atkins from Bolton police station said: “This is a heartless crime where victims, who are often vulnerable members of our community, are targeted by callous thieves.

“We are urging people to look at the e-fit and if it reminds them of anyone to get in touch with police.”

The first burglary took place in Thistleton Road, Deane, on February 13, when a man claiming to be from the council knocked on the door and said he needed to turn off the water.

While the 87-year-old occupant was in the kitchen with the man, an accomplice entered the house and searched the pensioner’s bedroom. Nothing was taken and both men left the house and walked towards Addington Road.

A 72-year-old woman, of Anglia Grove, Deane, was also a victim of conmen on March 2.

Two men, claiming to be from a water company, went to the house saying there had been an explosion nearby which had affected the water supply.

Once inside, one of the burglars stole a large sum of cash from the living room.

Police are now warning people to be wary of who they let into their homes.

PC Atkins said: “It is important to be cautious when opening the door to anyone who you don’t know. Put the chain on the door and ask them who they are and what they want.

“The water board has not existed for a number of years, so if they say they are from the water board then you will know they are bogus.

“People without an appointment or identification should be treated as suspicious. Don’t let them in your home, tell them to go away and don’t be afraid to call the police if you have any concerns.”
