WANDERERS put their play-off chase into overdrive with an incredible last-gasp win over Blackburn Rovers in last night’s derby.
Chris Eagles struck the winner with the last kick of the game, just as it appeared the Whites’ play-off chances had taken a dent.
The result means Wanderers – who moved up to ninth – have strung together four wins on the spin for the first time since December 2006. They last achieved five in a row earlier that season and that is what they will be aiming to achieve against Brighton this weekend.
It was also their first double of the season – having previously beatn Rovers 2-1 at Ewood back in November.
Eagles drilled home the winner in the 93rd minute from the edge of the box having arrived as a substitute in the 71st minute. It had been a remarkably tense affair – not high on quality or goalmouth chances – but Wanderers were certainly indebted to stand-in keeper Andy Lonergan for a number of fine saves on the night.
The ex-Leeds United man denied certain goals Grant Henley and Jordan Rhodes to keep the Whites on an even keel.
It was his first start in the Championship after his summer move from Elland Road after Adam Bogdan had failed a pre-match fitness test on a groin injury.
And though they dominated possession for much of the game, it was not until the late arrival of Eagles and Craig Davies that they seemed to have the incision to actually win the game.
Wanderers are now five points off the play-offs heading into Saturday’s vital clash with Brighton
