THE story was made famous by Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in the smash hit Hollywood blockbuster.

Then, the musical version of The Wedding Singer took Broadway by storm.

And now, St Paul's Players have made the story their own. From the opening bars of It's Your Wedding Day to the closing lines of the finale, the Adlington performers proved they could take on the work of A-listers – and make it fabulous.

This is no mean feat as the entire show has to be performed in American accents – all of which were superb and many of which would put professionals to shame – and a hideous 1980s wardrobe that would have made Cyndi Lauper proud.

But this is an all singing, all dancing, and at times very racy, feel good show with a punch.

Paul Roberts was superb as our hapless hero Robbie Hart, the character which gives the show its name, and Beth Corrigan was charming, witty and had a beautiful voice as lovelorn Julia Sullivan.

Luke Harrison and Jamie Fletcher – as Sammy and George, the remainder of Robbie's wedding band - both displayed not only brilliant vocals, eighties-tastic dance moves but fantastic comic timing.

I won't spoil the show but Sammy's “stupid” gag had the audience in stitches and George's take on one of the biggest names in 80s campness (the clue is in the name) would put Alistair McGowan to shame.

The rest of the supporting cast were excellent, combining tricky dance moves with powerful songs, especially Emily Morris as Holly.

Judith Armstrong as Rosie was brilliant as Robbie's (sometimes wayward gran), while Nicola Hayes perfectly captured the villainous Linda.

Special mention has to go to those behind the stage and set design, which was beyond impressive, Lily Blundell, for the choreography, and the “real” band who were wonderful.

Co-directors, Jane Catterall, who is herself planning her very own wedding, and Liz Blundell, should be very proud of everyone who made this fantastic show an amazing night out.

It's full of big songs, big laughs and a big amount of talent.
