BOLTON RUFC Under-16s maintained their 100 per cent record in the Lancashire Cup with a thrilling 19-14 victory at Ashton-under-Lyne.
Jack Robinson, Kieran Shacklock and Liam Austin scored tries and Jake Rigby and Will Lomax successfully converted in a game which saw the lead change hands five times.
The win sets up an intriguing final pool game with Widnes which will decide the pool winners.
Bolton took the lead when a backs move produced a breakdown on the Ashton 22m line from which the quick thinking of man-of-the-match Robinson saw him evade several tackles as he weaved his way over the try line.
Despite tackles from Jack Crompton, Joe Kusnyer, Wilkes and Austin, Ashton replied with a try of their own.
But Bolton regained the lead at the start of the second half when George Wilkes secured the ball and a quick pass from Eddie Redfern fed Shacklock who spotted the gap in the defensive line and scored under the posts, Rigby converting.
Again Ashton replied but Bolton stepped up the intensity of their game and Austin powered home a third try for Bolton before a superb conversion from wide by Lomax completed the scoring.
Bolton’s Senior Colts recorded a 13-6 victory over a much lighter Crewe side who gave the ball air at every opportunity.
Liam Hampson set up the first try with a clever, well-executed chip, before Alex McPolin kept Bolton’s lead intact with a super covering tackle and Gareth Pritchard scored a well constructed try in the corner.
The u7s and u8s combined to beat Tyldesley’s regular and development sides away.
Both encounters were close with Weyland Smith, Euan James, Finlay Rennie and Oliver Steel impressing, and Tom Brocklehurst, Cameron Hall and Nihal Aravind on the scoresheet.
The try of the day came after a jinking run the length of the pitch from Liam Worsley.
The u15s went down at Southport where they were without 10 players and saw excellent performances by Tom Hill, Wills Brindle and Wills McCambridge and some outstanding tackling by David Warren.
Lincoln Burns and Nikhil Maini, on his debut, made a big impact for the u11s in a defeat to Tyldesley.
l The u16s are looking for experienced players. Training takes place on Wednesday evenings at Bolton RUFC and games are played on Sunday mornings. Call manager Mark Townsend on 07789 837586.
