A paranoid schizophrenic has been sent to a high security hospital for life after stabbing a gifted violinist to death as he went to buy bagels in Manchester.
Jonathan Mills walked up to Jewish father-of-three Michael Kahan in the street and plunged a large kitchen-style knife into his stomach.
Mills, 32, had been discharged from hospital just 10 days earlier after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act, Manchester Crown Court heard.
A psychiatrist said the defendant had told him he had thoughts of attacking a Jewish person and then heard voices telling him to attack Mr Kahan, the court was told.
He said he stabbed Mr Kahan because he looked Jewish.
Mr Kahan, 39, was knifed in the chest and abdomen as he walked to a bakery in Middleton Road, Crumpsall, on June 1.
Mills, of Dawlish Avenue, Chadderton, was seen on CCTV parking his car and then crossed the road to block the path of Mr Kahan.
He took the knife from under his jacket and, without saying a word, he stabbed his victim before he escaped in his car.
Mr Kahan, of Highclere Road, Crumpsall, was rushed to North Manchester General Hospital but later died from his injuries.
Mills pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was given an indefinite secure hospital order.
