The driver of a blue van could be a vital witness for police investigating an arson attack in Ashton-under-Lyne.

A petrol bomb was thrown at the window of a flat on Oldham Road at about 6.30am on Monday 10 November 2008.

A blue van, believed to be a Vauxhall, was seen parked close to the flat with the engine running around the time of the incident, and police are keen to talk to the driver.

The bottle, which it is believed had petrol inside, smashed the outside of the double glazed panes of the window, but fortunately the inside leaded pane was not damaged.

The two people inside the flat at the time were not injured, but were left extremely shaken.

Detective Constable Claire Platt from Ashton CID said: "A blue Transit van was seen with its lights on and parked up near to the flat around the time of this attack, and whoever was inside could have vital information for my investigation.

"I would appeal to anyone that may have seen something to call police as the people who did this need to be caught and face the consequences of what could have been a much more serious incident."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Ashton CID on 0161 856 9255 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
