A pensioner fell prey to a couple that conned their way into her home and stole cash.

The 80-year-old woman was burgled at about 2.45pm on Monday 10 November 2008 at her home on Turner Street, Lees.

She answered the door and was confronted by a man and a woman. The victim was expecting workmen and the couple lied and said they were there to do some work. Having no reason to doubt them she let them in.

The woman kept the victim talking while the man, after pretending to check the fireplace, rooted through the house and stole a small quantity of cash from a drawer.

They then left and walked up Turner Street towards Greenacres Road.

The man is described as white, in his early 20s, of slim build with short dark hair and wearing dark clothing. The woman was white, in her early 20s, with dark brown shoulder length hair and wearing a hat. She was said to be slurring her words.

Police are appealing to anyone who sees a couple fitting this description in the area to come forward.

Detective Constable Rob Kennedy, based at Oldham CID, said: "I cannot understand the mentality of two people who would make a conscious decision to trick and steal from a vulnerable pensioner. Obviously, they have no morals, no scruples and no regard for anyone but themselves.

"I would appeal to anyone who sees this couple in the area to come forward so we can arrest them and stop them before they strike again.

"Local residents can also play their part by being especially vigilant at this time and not allowing anyone into their homes unless they can produce the correct identification. A reputable salesperson or caller will always be prepared to show you ID and give you the opportunity to check this with their employer."

Anyone with information is asked to call Oldham CID on 0161 856 8951 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
