THE future of Leigh Genesis is in serious doubt after owner Dominic Speakman pulled the plug on the UniBond Premier Division club.
Genesis had planned to be in their new home at Leigh Sports Village at the start of the season but delays have meant that would not happen until the middle of December at the earliest.
A frustrated Speakman said: “We were presented with a proposal from the council and the health and safety advisory committee to open a quarter of the stadium, which they judged to need 45 stewards of varying degrees of seniority, costing £3,000 per match, including five people to run the control room. All this for a match where there may only be 250 spectators.”
Leigh are due to play Cammell Laird in the FA Trophy second round at Victory Park, Chorley, on Saturday, and manager Steve Bleasdale has pledged he will attempt to put out a team as supporters rally round to keep the club afloat.
