Here is the full text of the statement from outgoing Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly announcing that she is to stand down from her Bolton West constituency at the next general election: ”It’s been an honour and privilege to serve Bolton West since I was first elected in May 1997.
”I want to say thank you to the people of Blackrod, Horwich, Westhoughton and the rest of West Bolton for all the tremendous warmth and support I’ve been shown during the last 11 and a half years.
”I’ve thoroughly enjoyed serving the people of my constituency and intend to continue to keep working diligently for them until the next general election.
”I’ve taken the area to my heart and will leave with a touch of sadness and fond memories, although I’m sure the decision I have taken is right for myself and my family.
”During my time as Bolton West’s MP I’ve seen the area improve and prosper beyond recognition.
”I’m proud to see that in many areas - such as its current pilot with free school meals - Bolton is now setting the agenda nationally.
”The quality of life for families has improved immensely through the Government’s investment in Sure Start Centres.
”When I first arrived many school buildings were crumbling and staff morale was low. Now it’s impossible to walk into any primary or secondary school in Bolton without seeing the transformations that have taken place.
”Huge investment has also taken place in modernising the housing stock giving families a better quality of life.
”Opportunities for older people have also improved dramatically including free travel on public transport for the over 60s, as well as free swimming.
”Of course many challenges remain but I’m confident that Labour under the strong leadership of Gordon Brown is well placed to help hard working families through these difficult times.
”I look forward to campaigning actively for Labour and firmly believe that we can win Bolton West at the next general election.
”Only a Labour Bolton West MP working with a Labour government will build in the years to come on the solid foundations we’ve already laid.”
