A pothole-ridden road driving both councillors and residents to distraction is to be resurfaced.

Road surfaces and pavements on Ivy Bank Road and Rosedale Avenue in Astley Bridge are currently undergoing resurfacing works after complaints from residents and councillors.

The road surface had multiple potholes, some resembling "gashes" which were "several metres long", and the pavements were also disintegrating.

Now, works are underway to fix the surface, which are expected to be finished within the next week.

Astley Bridge councillors Samuel Rimmer, Hilary Fairclough and John Walsh asked Bolton Council's Highways department to look at the road.

Cllr Rimmer said: “The roads were full of very large potholes, some being several metres long, almost gashes in the road. The pavements were crumbling and the tarmac was disintegrating.

“That road is also used heavily by people using Bar Lane Bowling Club, it gets a lot of traffic on the weekends.

“The impact on residents and people at the bowling club, it’s destroying people’s cars. You also have people pushing prams down there having to avoid holes.”

A picture of the road taken on Saturday shows the surface having been taken up.

He continued: “Working alongside Cllr Hilary Fairclough and Cllr John Walsh, I asked highways to look at repairs in this location.

“We are delighted that this work is now going ahead and look forward to seeing the work being completed in the next week.

“As councillors we get updates on roads in the area that need work. This was high on Highways’ radar, it was high on the list.”
