EMERGENCY services dashed to the Moses Gate area amid reports that a van had been driven into a pond.
The fire service received a call to say someone was in the vehicle and crews, including a specialist water unit, were joined by paramedics and police in racing to the Hall Lane area.
At first, there was no sign of the vehicle, and when it was eventually spotted, police said the vehicle had clearly been in the pond for some time and that there was nobody inside.
Following the call-out at 1.45pm on Saturday, Insp Philip Haworth, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We determined there was a vehicle in the water, but that it had been there for some time so we are not going to be diving for it.
"It will be up to the owner of the pond to remove it because it is not putting anybody at risk."
