IF Mersey Beat was still in circulation, founder Bill Harry declared he would put them on the cover, and Graham Gouldman of 10cc said they will go far.

So, with such well-established names supporting their cause, the MonaLisa Twins have the perfect platform as they get ready to play at The Met tomorrow along side BBC Radio Manchester DJ Mike Sweeney.

The 20-year-olds, so-called due to being twins called Mona and Lisa, are for many a breath of fresh air amidst raunchy pop acts like Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry.

The girls, who moved to Liverpool from Austria just eight weeks ago, are heavily inspired by the swinging sixties — and it is this influence which sets them apart from many other acts of today.

Even The Beatles’ press agent, Tony Barrow, has showed his support, saying: “If this was 30-plus years ago and I was back in the PR business, I do believe I'd be pitching for the MonaLisa Twins account.”

The pair, who have just released their latest single video, June, shot entirely in the Manchester and Merseyside area, are looking forward to their first proper UK tour.

Mona said: “We only moved here a couple of month ago so this is our first proper tour in the UK although we have played a few shows here before.

“We’re originally from Austria and moved to the UK two months ago. We literally just packed up our stuff and moved. I know everybody complains about the weather here but it is a small price to pay to be able to experience the music scene.

“Since coming here we have had a lot of support from radio DJ Mike Sweeney who is a real local legend. He’s been playing us on his BBC Radio Manchester show which is amazing.

“Having someone like him promoting and liking your music like that has been a fantastic support to us. It’s a real complement because he is a well known and well respected musician himself.”

The pair first started recording when they were just 13-years-old.
Lisa said: “We never really liked the usual chart stuff that you hear today.

Our inspiration comes from music like Bob Dylan and The Beatles thanks to our dad’s record collection. It’s not even that long ago really that such incredible music was being created.

“We started off just doing covers of our favourite songs from artists such as The Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel and The Hollies. It’s just as much fun doing that and we have learnt a lot from doing that.

“We know each other both so well and we are best friends — it couldn’t be better working together. We just hope that people enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoy making it.”

The MonaLisa Twins play at The Met in Market Street, Bury, tomorrow evening supporting Mike Sweeney, Paddy O’Hare with the Collective. For tickets call 0161 761 7107.
