FURTHER to the letter by Cllr Elaine Sherrington, “It’s plastic bottles only, please” (December 30), it now appears that I have to be more discriminating in my recycling of plastics.
I agree with recycling, but there are two points I wish to make.
Firstly, the website to which my recycling leaflet refers, bolton.gov.uk/recycling, has very little guidance on this point.
A search on “plastic” turns up very little.
If clean food cartons, yoghurt pots etc are not required, then the website needs bringing up to date and the information spelled out in clearer detail.
Secondly, how on earth is shipping plastic bottles to China classed as recycling?
Is this not just the modern equivalent of slave labour?
Is the plan now just to find the poorest people on earth and let them figure out a way of dealing with the problem?
I would have thought that shipping the stuff abroad, which in itself involves burning fuel, is just a movement of the problem.
Surely, the idea of recycling is that you deal with your own mess as you make it, on your own doorstep.
