THERE is a simple reason why there is so much controversy about the new Market Place. It is because everyone knows it marks the spot of £40 million worth of corporate vandalism.

The old Market Hall was a beautiful construction because it was unpretentious; the new interior inflates modernity making it impossible to appreciate the virtue of the wrought iron design which married style with function.

The only function of the new style market place is to marry the corporate dream with the dysfunctional aspirations of debt ridden consumers.

Hence the bloated obfuscation of the original aesthetic is not accidental but an inevitable outcome of the greed and phoney values endemic in our society.

As such the new market place is alien to the character of Bolton and it’s citizens protest.
