IT beggars belief that a so-called cycling-friendly council should welcome a “Hummer” on to the streets of Bolton, bearing in mind that this vehicle, worthy though it may be in off-road circumstances, presents a very real threat on country lanes that are so popular with local cyclists.
The lanes of Rivington will no doubt be seeing a good deal of this oversized vehicle as will the many recreational cyclists who so love the area. The standard off-road vehicle at present used in mountain rescue, the ubiquitous Land Rover, has stood the test of time, both here and abroad.
The use of the “Hummer” is just another hype, bigger and better, but surely not on the narrow winding lanes of our beloved countryside.
