WITH all the arguments about the proposed congestion charge, a trip into town one lunchtime last week set me thinking: shouldn’t we have a congestion charge for people rather than cars?

Why is it that people who don’t work, and I include pensioners in this, insist on clogging up the shops on a busy lunchtime when most of us, who only get 30 to 60 minutes break, are in a hurry to get jobs done?

And they don’t travel alone. They come pushing prams and pushchairs, with extended family alongside them, and stand, apparently helpless and never in single file, in the middle of aisles so we can’t get past.

Then, when rush-hour is over, they return home — job of preventing people from doing their own shopping in a limited timespan well done.

The introduction of a congestion charge of, say, a pound for anyone who heads into town with unnecessary members of family in tow, would soon sort out the problem.

Vote yes to a people congestion charge!
