IN reply to Peter Johnston’s letter, (“BBC: London not the centre of the universe” November 4). I am not opposed to the plans to decentralise at the BBC.
My criticism is that those mentioned appear piece-meal and not properly thought out.
I am an avid viewer of Question Time and its movement around the country is a good thing.
My memory tells me, and Mr Johnston will correct me if I’m wrong, that the programme only rarely ventures north of the border. On the occasions that it has, most of the panel have been Scottish politicians and the audience more interested in affairs affecting themselves rather than the UK .
The danger, as I said, might be that politicians located in London may be reluctant to travel the distance for the sake of a one-hour programme. Therefore, the likelihood is the programme will gradually morph into a Scottish Question Time.
What is wrong with moving the production unit to Scotland and still travelling throughout the UK?
The fact that BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions roams the country and The Archers has always been located in Birmingham is irrelevant to these proposals.
Mr Johnston suggested the reason for the redistribution is financial. I am more inclined to believe it is exactly because London is not the centre of the universe.
Whilst on TV, if Angela Kelly wishes to take issue with the soaps, she could do much better than castigate Deirdre and her mother for “fagging-it”. I suggest she looks at the more undesirable storylines that promote under-age sex, unwanted pregnancies, violence and, now, gun crime. Even Neighbours currently has a 16-year-old schoolgirl “shacking-up” with her ex-teacher.
Those who wonder where our young people get their ideas of how to behave need only watch any of these dramas. It’s all there.
