I COULD not believe my eyes when I read The Bolton News on November 15. It was reported that councillors were “concerned” over futuristic-style car parks in the St George’s conservation area.
The council was concerned that the glass, brick and aluminium multi-storey car park might look out of place! Why is it concerned when it allowed the same type of development only yards away on Bark Street?
What a monstrosity that is. It dwarfs the Claremont Church and St George’s Road will be sandwiched between the two!
Cllr Walsh stated that a multi-storey car park should blend in with its Georgian surroundings.
Forgive my ignorance if I’m wrong but the Georgians did not have car parks, multi-storey or otherwise, nor did the Victorians. So why try to make one “blend in”?
If they want buildings to blend in, they should be built on a par with the Crescent, or the Town Hall.
Perhaps that’s the answer — take the insides out of the Town Hall, as it is a multi storey building and it will certainly blend in.
The council lot also stated that this is a sensitive area. Well, all areas in Bolton were sensitive but this never bothered the council before, so why change the habits of a lifetime.?
This is the same concerned council that demolished St Mary’s School, cut St George’s School in half, closed down the St George’s Church Craft Centre, and is in the process of demolishing the former Clarence Street Community Centre.
This is all in this sensitive area. I’ve not even mentioned Little Bolton Town Hall — what a sorry state that is. Hang your heads in shame.
At a time when the government is trying its damnedest to force cars off the road and out of our town centres with the congestion charge, this council does the exact opposite. They should all be in pantomimes.
What is the council going to do with all these car parks in 50 years time when the oil runs out? Will they knock them down like everything else? It’s an ongoing farce.
