IT is reassuring to know that the police are tackling the problem of yobs on our streets.

The front page article in The Bolton News, “Victory over the yobs” (November 7), proves that things can get better if we all work together.

The story praised the work of Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Mervin Fox in identifying the young culprits who have been making life a misery for many residents of the New Lane area of Top O’th’ Brow.

I know Mervin and have seen first-hand the excellent work he does on his patch. Mervin is a very conscientious and dedicated young man, and a credit to the uniform he wears.

All too often, people criticise the PCSOs without actually knowing what these officers do. In the main they do an excellent job. One thing I am not happy about, though, is that Mervin is now trying to get the bus shelter in New Lane removed.

Come on Mervin! Have you ever had to wait for a bus on a wet and windy day where there isn’t a shelter?

This particular one serves most of the Top O’th’ Brow estate and is very well used. We need more shelters, not less. The idea of removing this shelter is like closing public toilets because we get low-life haunting them.

What next! Close the schools because we get some yobbish kids attending occasionally?

We could even close the A&E because of the aggressive drunks!

Get rid of the yobs Mervin, not the bus shelters.
