THERE have been several letters of late on the topic of speeding/ignorant drivers, accidents and traffic cameras.

Many authorities are now stopping the use of the cameras that they already have installed as they say it is not proven that they reduce accidents. One reason may be the following: If you take a stretch of road one mile long and put one camera at one end, that leaves 9/10ths of a mile in which people can and, if so inclined, will speed.

The only way to overcome this would be to increase the cameras to three on the same stretch of road.

Also, I have to say that not every accident involving a car is the fault of the driver, whether speeding or not. Just today on my trip home for dinner, there was a driving instructor with a learner parked directly opposite the turn into my avenue.

This meant that I had to turn into my avenue at a much sharper angle than usual, making it a blind turn. To my amazement, upon turning I found a woman standing in the middle of the road, letting her dog roll around on the ground!

I regularly come across cyclists at night with no lights; they appear out of side streets or straight off the pavement onto the road. Yet if I was to knock one of them off, I would get the blame as I am driving a car!

It is the duty of everyone to act sensibly and with consideration for others.
