I AM writing following recent letters about BBC programmes and the possible relocation of production to the regions.

What is so wrong in moving from London? It would bring the BBC into closer contact with the rest of the nation and takes advantage of cheaper rent and wages.

Casualty is moving from Bristol to Cardiff because Cardiff is equipped with HD technology and the Cardiff drama department is one of the centres of excellence — with the new Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Mysteries, just to name a few. Bristol will become the centre of excellence for natural history.

Question Time is very rarely filmed in studios these days, so why be bothered about its production team being based in London?

In fact, it is now made by independent producers and its move is probably due to costings.

Do not forget that Manchester already houses religious and current affairs for the network. Once the studios and offices are ready, then Sport, Children's (CBBC and CBeebies), BBC3 and a couple of the national radio stations will be based in Salford. That is a great opportunity for local talent and producers, especially as ITV and Granada is cutting back, left right and centre.

This is good news rather than bad. Look forward to it and be proud that the North-west is at the heart of the TV networks, rather than being sidelined.
