THE current storyline in Coronation Street surrounding Rita Tanner’s increasing memory problems in what has looked like dementia has been very affecting.
Actress Barbara Knox has been putting in a remarkable performance as the Street’s veteran newsagent whose memory keeps failing her. It all culminated in strange behaviour during Eva’s hen party and a fall which landed her in hospital.
Now, a brain tumour has been diagnosed as the plot has turned in a different direction. The storyline has not only highlighted Knox’s talents but also those of promising newcomer Dolly-Rose Campbell as the incomparable Gemma Winter.
In less than a year, this character has gone from uncaring chav to a complex, likeable, caring but still feisty young woman who is now firmly anchored in the soap.
Meanwhile, regular viewers will view Rita’s condition with concern and it will be fascinating to see where this unexpected storyline goes with these characters. One thing is certain: more excellent scriptwriting and plots from the Corrie crew.
