AS readers may be aware, the 519/520 has ceased to run.
We're now fighting to get it back. Smithills Labour Party, unlike some other parties who paid lip service, fully supported the campaign in real, practical, terms from day one and will continue to do so.
As a 'concession', First have introduced a return fare of £2.60 from Johnson Fold (the old fare was £1.30 each way).
However, I'm sure residents of Moss Bank Way, New Church Road and Church Road will be dismayed to learn that the fare is not available to them. It will still be £1.70 each way if you catch the 501 from the above named streets.
We at Smithills Matters and Smithills Ward Labour Party believe that this concession should apply anywhere along the route where the fare is greater than £1.30.
It's brilliant that pressure from Johnson Fold caused First to offer this concession, but, in fairness, it should apply elsewhere on the route.
Not everyone is fit enough to walk along New Church Road, Knott Lane and Tattersall Avenue on to the stop near St James the Great to take advantage of this fare. First have confirmed to me, via email, that: "Nothing has changed for the residents of Moss Bank Way, New Church Road and Church Road catching the 501."
We suggest that all concerned residents e-mail the Head of Customer Services at First, Brandon Jones to express their concerns. I'm sure he'll be pleased to hear from you. Meanwhile, we in Smithills Labour will continue to support the residents in their campaign to #Bringbackthe519.
