I STARTED working at Tootals as a weaver in January 1961. ("Unsafe mill and clock tower to be bulldozed" February 23)

It was like one big happy family, working in the weaving sheds. I met my wife there later that year. She worked in the wages office.

She used to read the pick recorders on our looms then calculate our bonuses. On Thursday she and other wages clerks came round to the weaving sheds to pay out our wages. My wife Eileen (nee Jones) and I started courting, However I was told that only 20 per cent of mill romances lasted more than a year. We celebrated our Golden Wedding anniversary last September. We must have been one of the 20 per cent.

We both have many happy memories of our time there and still have contact of some of our work colleagues.
