I READ with interest about the problems that Bolton Council is having in recruiting lollipop men and women.
I am a fit and active 70-year-old, well used to working in all weather conditions. Several months ago I completed an application form to join the ranks of Bolton's school crossing patrol team.
After four weeks - when I had not even received an acknowledgement - I telephoned Trevor Higson, Bolton's principal road safety officer. I was told that it was Bolton Council's policy not to employ applicants over 65 years of age.
May I suggest that the council review this policy in the spirit of the Age Discrimination Act, and at least interview older applicants to assess their suitability.
You never know, they may find they haven't as big a problem as they think.
