WE have read a lot of correspondence from Ms Dunleavy, Conservative candidate, and Cllr Lever, in respect of the road safety measures being taken on the Crompton Way ring road.
May I remind Cllr Lever that, from Moss Bank Way to Asda at Atley Bridge, safety improvements were introduced because of four fatalities and several severe car accidents, by support of the Conservative group at planning.
Since these measures of slowing traffic down by single lanes and back to two lanes on approaching traffic lights, now the lights being the only stoppage, we have had no one killed and traffic accidents are virtually nil.
Pedestrians and cyclists have as much right as motorists on these roads.
As a motorist, who uses this stretch of road at least three times a week at peak periods, morning and evening, safety of everyone is paramount.
As a resident of the area, motorists still try and use the ring road as though it is Brands Hatch.
You have only have to watch the junction at Smithills Dean Road when the lights are on green to see the speed they move at, then dangerously overtake.
And they are still only at the lights at the junction near Asda when all the other motorists arrive who have been driving correctly.
There are three schools and a college in that vicinity, and children, being children, cross at all parts of the road.
The Tonge Moor/Thicketford Road section of the ring road is far more built-up, and has had a series of road accidents and fatalities and, for Cllr Lever's attention. This traffic calming is what the residents want.
The Tonge Ward councillors have listened to their views and acted accordingly. This is what they are elected to do and good luck to them.
We hear from Ms Dunleavey that it takes her 10 minutes longer to travel to work - tough - just set out a few minutes earlier!
The statement from Cllr Lever when he said on Tower FM (March 13), "Scout Road has now become the ring road, with a large increase in accidents", I would say, prove it. It would be interesting to have those figures published.
