PETER Johnston is correct that you need 12 months' figures to make an effective assessment of recycling in the town. However, I find Cllr Sherrington's comments about collection of statistics puzzling.
It is all very well going on about reliable statistics over two years, but the same reliable statistics are produced every month and are published by the council in the public domain. What those figures are saying is that recycling is going down. After my last letter, the December figure was published and it had dropped to 25 per cent - a three per cent drop over the November figure.
I find this quite astonishing. When the Liberal Democrats came into office, the recycling rate was eight per cent. It went up to 35.3 per cent because of how refuse was collected, including recycling. What hasn't been answered yet by any of the current administration is how you can lose 13 per cent on the monthly figures - and it is not because it is winter either!
Or is 25 per cent considered to be a consistently high rate?
