I WAS more than interested to read in The Bolton News (Wednesday, February 28) of the proposed plan to build a new Sainsbury's supermarket on the site of Westhoughton Cricket Club.
Having seen the artist's impression of how this new supermarket could look, I started to think that maybe, at last, Westhoughton was moving into the 21st century.
But we have been told by town councillor David Chadwick that we should be satisfied with the Co-op "supermarket" on Pavilion Square, and the Late Shop on Market Street, along with Asda and Tesco at Middlebrook, Asda and Sainsbury's at Leigh, and Tesco at Hindley, all being equi-distant at four-to-five miles away.
How convenient, then, are these stores for someone who doesn't have their own transport and has to carry home heavy shopping for the week?
There was no objection by the council to 800-plus new houses being built in Westhoughton, even though there would be associated traffic problems and no extra facilities, so why not allow a decent supermarket to be built on an ideal site, serving the people of Westhoughton and bringing business and jobs into the town?
