ONCE again it appears that our town centre planners are out of touch with the wishes of Bolton's electorate.

This time, by condoning the destruction of the Odeon, a building of character whose facade is an excellent example of art deco, in order to make way for (surprise, surprise!) another apartment block.

Add this to the Churchgate fiasco, the Lido "listing ship", St George's Road, ski slope/public toilets, and one gets the picture.

Many needs are crying out for a town centre venue, not least one for which the Odeon was originally built, namely a cinema. Amateur societies sometimes struggle to find suitable accommodation for their productions, as do local artists. Are we to witness by an act of official vandalism another missed opportunity?
