I WOULD like to respond to a letter published in The Bolton News sent by J Smith, R Hughes and G Platt.
Firstly, I would like to point out that it was a decision taken by the executive member to close the cash offices, and was because most people now pay by other methods, that keeping these offices open was not considered good value to the tax payers of Bolton.
The local councillors were invited to a meeting to explain why they were taking this action and have explained the other places that payments could be made. This would mean more places to pay, many outside office hours which is more convenient than the present system. These are known as "Payzone" "Paypoint" and "E.Pay", which are available at over 250 outlets. You can also pay at post offices and over the phone by debit or credit card.
Customers can get details of locations by calling 01204 331599. The information offices are to remain open and advance notice will be given of any closure of cash offices. Local councillors insisted that these payment systems are in place before any offices close and that staff would be offered alternative employment within the council, or redundancy, to avoid any hardship to them or their families.
Some other points raised in the letter about people not calling in shops is a nonsense. If they are paying in a local shop, they are more likely to pick up their shopping while they are there!
I would also state that paying by these methods will not cost the customer!
I agree, however, about closing post offices. We in the Lib Dems campaigned for many years to keep them open, however the Government still chose to close them and we are one of the major supporters of the Sustainable Communities Bill and there is a public meeting on March 30 at 7.30pm at the Reebok Stadium where they can attend to show support for it. We are hoping Ruth Kelly will attend, but she has yet to respond. I hope that the residents' association is happy with this response. We have always fought for the people of Horwich and will continue to do so.
Cllr Steve Rock Bolton
