I DON’T suppose everyone will like the new Bolton-based BBC1 show Scrappers but I loved it.
Our local accent has come in for criticism elsewhere in the country but, nit-picking apart, the documentary fly-on-the-wall look at daily life at Metro Salvage on Waterloo Street is fascinating.
Owners Terry and Lyndsay Walker come across as hard-working people trying to make the business successful while employing a cross-section of individuals. There are several rough diamonds there, including 19 year-old Lewis O’Boyle who likes to be known as Boyle.
He’s being brought on by Terry, who even supported him by joining him in taking a practical exam on using the scrapyard machinery. Boyle beat Terry by a single point and the youngster’s delight in passing so well was lovely to see.
This is a warm-hearted programme, full of real characters and humour, and the town emerges generally in a very positive light.
