I TOO experience anger, frustration and disappointment at the failure of many residents of Bolton to act responsibly by taking home their litter, rather than dumping it around the town.
Over the past 40 years, members of Soroptimist International of Bolton have arranged litter picks on a section of Moss Bank Way. You may have seen us in our high-vis jackets, carrying grabbers and bags provided by the council.
At a glance, the pavements and road edges seem fairly clear. However, out of sight, behind the wooden fences and down the banking under the trees is a disgraceful sight — plastic bags, bottles, glass and plastic, tins, packaging, generated from picnics or suppers eaten on the way home and building materials and rubble dumped instead of being taken to Raikes Lane.
Our most recent collection included a car bumper, possibly damaged in an accident, dumped in the undergrowth, certainly not biodegradable.
What happened to “take your rubbish home”, not to the one small black bin we used to have, but to the four large ones available to us, emptied fortnightly, or take a trip to the facility at Raikes Lane.
